Tree In the Mist

Alaka’i Swamp Trail, Kauai’i

This photo was taken on a hike on the Alaka’i Swamp Trail on Kaua’i. Clouds and mist dampened the skies and sweat drenched our clothes, but we continued on. About three miles into the hike we chanced across this tree that appeared as if it were dead, but then the mist begrudgingly revealed its growing upper reaches. It was winning the battle for survival and I just had to get its picture.

Along the way some young hikers remarked on the drizzle and recommended we have rain gear. I mused over this a bit and the following verse came to mind:

We heard the advice from the nice young guy

Who told us how we ought to stay dry

But when you’re already soaked with rain and sweat

How much wetter could we possibly get?
