Maui Gold Pineapples

Well, they are pineapples, not stooges I guess, and if they were named after their looks, they would be Spike, Spike, and Spike. But they are Howard’s, and they are Fine. They are the descendants of pineapples that we brought back from Maui more than a decade ago, either from the tops of harvested pineapples, or suckers off of the original plants.

We were going to do a major replanting last spring using the pineapple tops and suckers since most of the leaves were frostbitten over the winter. However, several plants showed pineapple buds in spite of the cold, so we pruned the dead leaves and wound up with straggly plants that looked like severely sheared sheep. None the less, they bore fruit yet again and there are still “Moe” to come.
