Afternoon Delight

Great Egret on Dora Canal

A great egret watched without concern as we passed by in a pontoon boat during an afternoon tour of Dora Canal near Mount Dora, Florida. More than a hundred years ago it would have been much more elusive, for it would have been the target of hunters seeing its feathers for fashion, and they were killed in large numbers. Now protected, they have rebounded and are frequently seen in wetland areas, as well as in retention ponds and other bodies of water in towns and cities and have adapted well to human habitation.
