Streamers in Sunbeams

Spanish Moss in the Rising Sunlight

The Native expression for this dangling delight translated in to “tree hair.” Early French explorers quickly turned it into a derogatory “Spanish Moss,” since it reminded them of the long beards sported by Spaniards arriving in the galleons. Still it is an intriguing sight when illuminated by shafts of sunlight in the early morning.

I can’t help but wonder, however, how beards of such length would have managed aboard a sailing ship. Perhaps it would have been useful to tickle a wench, but it would surely would have made them wince were it to be caught in a winch.
