Eyes grow moist as we think of the people of Maui and the firestorm disaster at Lahaina. We have spent many days there admiring the views and learning of the Hawaiian culture. Now it appears that the banyan tree, planted in 1873, was severely charred along with the major portion of the town. Photos from the past day show that the Old Lahaina Courthouse in the background was totally burned, only its stone walls remained standing. The upper level of the courthouse housed the Lahaina Heritage Museum where priceless papers, pictures, and artifacts were housed, now irreplaceably lost.
Sadly, several have lost their lives and we mourn for them, but we are greatly relieved to discover that friends we have made there have survived. We wish the best for the people of Maui and for recovery of the area, but it will be a long time coming, and Lahaina as we knew it is forever gone.

We too are incredibly sad about the losses Maui has sustained in lives and island treasures. Lovely memories come to mind of our time there. Our prayers go out for the people and the resilience in restoration.
