Skinny Side of Morning

Venus Yesterday Morning
Venus and Moon, same magnification.

It was not surprising to see thin, waning crescent moon in the early morning, but Venus? Yes, even Venus shows phases as can be seen in the telescopic images above. It recently passed between the sun and earth, and was nearly invisible then. Now it is rising higher and higher in the sky and very bright even though it is a tiny crescent. Over the next several months as it orbits around the sun it will progress to quarter phase and then eventually to almost full before it disappears from view on the opposite side of the sun. As its phase increases, it will appear to grow smaller and smaller since it is moving farther and farther away from us. Its appearance as it passes around the sun seems almost enchanted.
