Happy Slacker

Hand-made Hawaiian Ukule Tuned C Taro Patch Slack Key

Several years ago we went on a one day tour of Moloka’i. I had the good fortune to meet Todd Ragsdale who made this koa wood tenor Ukulele which I subsequently purchased. It has a lovely sound with a low G fourth string (octive lower than standard ukulele). Two years ago I purchased a slack-key ukulele video and learned to play in C taro patch tuning, also known as “slack key.” It is tuned GCEG as opposed to GCEA on usual ukuleles. This just means that I can play the C cord by strumming all the strings without touching the fretboard.

It’s a unique Hawaiian sound that is a delight to play. Since this ukulele was made by a native Hawaiian using Hawaiian koa wood, it was the very best instrument to tune to slack key (ki ho’alu in Hawaiian). It’s perfect for when I feel like “slacking!”
