My Own Constellation

“Ukulélé Tahitien” beside the Seven Sisters.

The vision of the “V” shaped Hyades star cluster in the constellation, Taurus, and a bright star beyond the apex of the “V” reminded me of a Tahitian Ukulele. Four stars of the cluster frame the body of the ukulele in this picture, and the star at the apex of the “V” can be seen where the body meets the fretboard. The bright star beyond the apex of the “V” shines through a hole just beyond the tuning pegs. So, I have usurped this part of the constellation, Taurus, and renamed it, “Ukulélé Tahitien.” No, the French translation of “Tahitian ukulele” is not official, but it is how I will see this part of the sky evermore.

PS–The ukulele pictured was hand-carved by a local in Ua Huka, French Polynesia. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to meet the man who made it, but I did meet his wife and his daughter who sold it to me in 2016.
