Ukulele At Home Abroad

My Tahitian ukulele at home in Bora Bora.

I bought this Tahitian ukulele in Pape’ete, Tahiti, from a half-blind street vendor who played it masterfully, even thought he was left-handed and the uke is strung for a right-handed player. It came home with us, and at customs the agent wanted to see and hear it. I happily obliged, and he commented that if he’d been there he would have bought six of them.

Though well cared for and played regularly here in Florida, it seemed a little lonely, so I took it along on the next trip to French Polynesia. On our arrival at Rohotu Fare on Bora Bora, it was obvious that it had found its true home, so I left it there in the care of our friends.

Upon our return to the island last year, though happy to see me, it was obvious that it would not go back with us. Cradled comfortably in the arms of our Tahitian host, the ukulele was content to stay right there in Bora Bora, but it does look forward to our next visit.
