There was always something special about sleeping on the boat while at anchor or “on the hook” as the saying goes. Once the anchor was well set, the boat would move a bit from side to side as it reacted to the wind, waves, and current, but never drift. Small waves striking the hull would ripple and splash, as if laughing, when the water was gentle. If the winds rose, an occasional wave would break along the bow with a loud thump followed by a hissing swish and set us to rocking.
Usually we would anchor in protected areas free from any large waves, but Chuckanut Bay in Washington state, pictured above, was open to winds from the north, so we kept a close eye on the weather and never had to leave due to rough conditions. These were wonderful times with treasured memories that have endured for more than 20 years, and I still dream now and then of gently bobbing about in the berth of the Fairy Boat on the hook.
PS–I have written stories about our adventures on the Fairy Boat, several of which have been published. They may be found in this blog’s dropdown menu: “Once Upon a Fairy Boat.”
