Solar Hot Spot

Fading Solar Flare

Yesterday morning the sun unleased another solar flare, and I caught views of it fading away. The brightest area on the upper left image is around 50,000 miles across and shows the flare shortly after its peak while the lower right shows the same region after the flare has ended. The other two images show the fading flare activity. The top two images remind me of a gleaming, grinning skull, which in a way is appropriate. Distance equals safety, and we can be very happy that we are 93 million miles away as these magnetic explosions hurl x-rays and other radiation into space.
