Special Sun Things

Seeing the sun with a little help from my friends.

Nearly every day I observe and image the sun though specially-designed telescopes that exclude all harmful rays and make it safe for the eye. I have three of these dedicated telescopes, each with their own special filters that reveal different solar details. I think of them as my “special sun things.” I am holding the Hydrogen-alpha telescope that produced yesterday’s images on the left. The right lower image is a close up of a region at the top of the whole-disk photo where a magnetic explosion is in process. The white circle shows the relative size of earth for the close up image. Make you feel small?

I am also wearing another special sun thing, the collar around my neck. It doesn’t take any pictures, but it does blow cool air around the neck and head while I am sitting in the hot sunlight for half an hour or more. And that is something special.

PS–Sometime in late July I will likely cross a major solar observation milestone. I will let you know what when it actually occurs.
