Regarding Rainbows and Telescopes

Head for shelter or get soaked!

Yesterday morning I set up the telescopes for the usual morning solar viewing and imaging. Clouds dominated the sky, but there was a small gap in clouds to the east, just enough to see the sun well. Paying little attention to the rest of the sky, I did the usual sunspot count and managed to get whole-disk images of the sun. So far, so good.

As I prepared for close ups, I felt this strange sensation. OMG! What was that? Small drops of rain descended from the sky though I was still spotlighted by sunbeams. I looked to the west to discover the rainbow portending more rain in the immediate future.

Rain and expensive telescopes don’t mix, regardless of how pretty the rainbow might be. With proper haste, I carried all of the gear back into the shed before anything could get improperly hydrated. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
