One Hundred Thousand Years and Eight Minutes

Morning Mist from Ancient Solar Energy

Warmth from morning sunbeams sent steamy vapors streaming outward and upward from the trunk of this tree. I just had to savor magic of the moment before releasing my inner nerd, for the energy that made it happen was created a long time ago. Here goes!

Sometime about 100,000 years ago some protons in the center of the sun were very much in love…No, wait, that’s a different story! However, around 100,000 years ago a huge number of protons were squished into helium nuclei to produce energy just like a hydrogen bomb, only vastly greater. It is a testimony to the unbelievable, crushing pressure of the solar gravity that the sun has not blown up!

Scientists estimate that it takes about 100,000 years for the atomic energy generated at its core to travel to the surface of the sun. It then takes the energy, in the form of infrared light, about 8 minutes to travel to earth from the sun. Of course we can’t see infrared light, but we can see and feel the satisfying effects of the ancient energy it carries, even though it took about a 100,000 years and eight minutes for that energy to get here.
