Brown Blackbird

Female Red-winged Blackbird

At the Ocala Wetland Recharge Park in Ocala, Florida, I found this cute, little, brown bird and thought it was a type of sparrow that I had never seen before. It obligingly held still for this photo so I could later identify it. To my surprise, it isn’t a sparrow, but rather a female red-winged blackbird. Though it lacks the familiar black body with red shoulder patches of the male, it has its own unique beauty.

I was not surprised once again to be fooled by a female, for I have never quite been able to keep up with the ladies.

  1. We love the red-winged blackbird and it’s call.  Anxiously awaiting its return to the feeder.  Sent via the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G, an AT&T 5G smartphoneEr
