A chipping sparrow remained patiently at the feeder, most of the time just looking about, during the half hour I spent observing the sun yesterday morning. I liked to think that it was a little friend curiously watching, sharing the moment. Maybe not, but that’s what I chose to believe.
At first I thought it was too small to be a chipping sparrow; they had seemed so much larger earlier in the month. Then it dawned on me, I was used to seeing them when they were cold and had their feathers puffed out to stay warm. Yesterday it was very comfortably warm and there was no need to puff up. So, it seemed, we were both enjoying the sun, though in different ways and for different purposes.
Here’s a photo of a very large group of sunspots on the sun that I took. For comparison, the biggest spot left of center on the image is larger than the earth.
