We set off with no particular destination in mind, just looking for a place to have lunch along the only major road around Mo’orea. At the opposite end of Cook’s Bay one diner that we had considered was closed up tight, and nothing else appeared along the road for a couple of miles.
The road coursed around the point to Opunohu Bay, and near the other end of the bay, a roadside sign advertised food and drink by the bay. We turned into the rough, root-laced dirt parking area, and proceeded over uneven ground pocked with crab holes to a table under the dense canopy of trees next to the water. The tables were all close to the water since there was limited space between the bay and the road.
The only building housed the kitchen and bar, and was well weathered and open in the front and the back. Lunch was slow in coming but was quite good, especially the maitai, which I only allowed a sip since I was driving. We were not concerned at all about the wait, how could we be? We had a marvelous view of the bay and mountains and were entertained by crabs warily skittering about, only to swiftly scamper into their holes whenever humans approached.
