Birds in the Wings

Cardinal and Catbird at Feeder

They queued in bushes and on the fence awaiting their turn at the top of the feeder. First, a wren in the bushes gazed longingly upward while a cardinal and a catbird sat on the fence awaiting the departure of another wren already perched atop of the feeder. By the time I fetched the camera, the wrens were gone but the catbird still sat on the fence while the lady cardinal occupied the top perch. Finally, the cardinal flew away and was quickly replaced by the catbird. Each left their mark.

After the feathers had cleared, I had to mount a stepladder with soap and water to erase the “signatures” the birds had left behind comemorating their presence on the top of the feeder, but the show had been worth it.
