Allergen Alley

Hibiscus Anthers Spilling Pollen

The spring plants are in full bloom as are allergy symptoms caused by their pollen. The pollen is produced by anthers, the white structures on the end of filaments as seen in both photos. When they ripen, pollen is released, as seen in the right photo, to fertilize flowers and produce seeds. In the process, the pollen also likes to clog the sinuses and airways and generally annoy nice people. So, if the question of where do these allergens come from, anthers is the answer.
