Piliated Woodpecker Chiding Red-shouldered Hawk

The loud, raucous call of an agitated piliated woodpecker drew our attention to a nearby tree where both it and a red-shouldered hawk were perched. The woodpecker was intent on harassing the hawk, which held its ground, seemingly unruffled. The confrontation was understandable in light of the fact that the hawk eats small critters including other birds! Finally, the woodpecker flew off, still casting a final few birdie words over its shoulder at the hawk.

Somehow, it reminded me of a celebrity who recently declared that people could either love animals or eat animals but not both, and she bragged that she chose to love animals. I couldn’t help wondering if she liked all animals or only the ones that weren’t carnivores.

I doubt that the hawk even cares.
