Sunny Side Up

Waning crescent moon over the western horizon.

When the waxing crescent moon is visible low in the western sky just after sunset, the sunlit side of the moon always faces downwards towards the horizon, though some paintings I have seen portray it backwards with the bright side of the moon up, away from the horizon. That never happens at sunset.

Whether those paintings were from ignorance or artistic license, I don’t know, but the only time a crescent moon is visible low in the west with its sunny side up, away from the horizon, is when it is waning and the sun is high in the sky as seen in the photo above.

That is a rare and satisfying sight for the nerdly mind that struggles to comprehend artistic interpretations.
