Say “Ah…”

Cruise ship at confluence of Snake and Columbia Rivers

We stopped recently at Sacagawea Historical State Park at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia rivers and saw this cruise ship with a gangplank protruding from its gaping bow to allow passengers to go ashore. It came from Portland, Oregon, on the Columbia River and was headed to Clarkston, Idaho, 150 miles farther up the Snake River. Winds gusting to 40 mph had stirred up steep waves along the way that left some of its occupants a little seasick. The winds and rough water were expected to continue.

We cruised those same waters from Bonneville Dam on the Columbia to Clarkston along the Snake River several years ago in the Fairy Boat, and also experienced high winds and waves that kept us off the water at times. Though a historical passage, upstream of the Columbia Gorge the landscape along both rivers is mostly dry, drab, brown, and the waters are frequently rough. It was fun at times, but more often it was an ordeal. See: https://eskildoodle.com/columbia-cruise/ and https://eskildoodle.com/up-the-snake/

I sincerely hoped the remainder of their cruise would be more tranquil, but I was not optimistic.
