Peek at a Peak From 32,000 Feet

Over Rocky Mountain National Park

Clouds shrouded the view for most of our recent cross country flight. About half way through the trip I glanced down, wondering where we were. The clouds reluctantly gave way at the perfect moment, and I caught a glimpse of the familiar terrain of Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park. First the Twin Sisters, then Mount Meeker, and finally Long’s Peak came into view. Wow!

Longs Peak has been the subject of lore and adventure throughout my lifetime. Dad spoke of it often and climbed it several times. I had walked part way up it as a small child, but only made it to timberline, while my two brothers and dad battled wind and snow to summit and hurriedly return. Finally, when I was twelve years old, Dad led me up the cable route to the top and then down the other side, across cliffs and through the Key Hole and back down the mountain. Though I may never again set foot on its summit, I holds a special place in my heart, and I will very likely tread along its slopes again in the future.
