Azalea blossoms of varied hues are bursting out all over much to the delight of butterflies, humming birds, and of course, ordinary people. There seem to be more than ever this year. We will enjoy the azaleas for the next several weeks as well as the roadside flowers and other plants in bloom. They seemContinue reading “Azaleas by the Bazillions”

Christmas Future, Christmas Past?
Last holiday season we found similar snowmen at a friend’s party, and talked to the gentleman who made them. He agreed to make some for us as time permitted, and as of yesterday they now reside with us. The older, perhaps wiser, snowman is fondly reminiscing, as we old farts are wont to do, ofContinue reading “Christmas Future, Christmas Past?”
Shadow and Substance
It was a fortuitous moment as sunlight passed through door panes, illuminated flowers, and cast their shadows upon the wall. Within minutes the scene had vanished. Witnessing this curious light play created a pleasant memory; photographing it has turned it into a memory shared. #shadow #substance #memories #sunlight
Catkins
Just days ago they were light golden-green blooms, clinging to the tiniest branches of the surrounding oak treas. Since then, they have shed their pollen, have turned brown, and have fallen, scattering their sad remnants over driveways, cars, and patios. We once heard a botanist call these dangling male tree appendages a rather indelicate, thoughContinue reading “Catkins”
Ibish
Ibises tolerate humans fairly well and are actually are quite cute once you get past their funny-looking beaks. There is a limit, however, to how closely they want to associate with people. They do keep a wary eye and walk away if we get too close, so we always maintain a respectful distance. We alsoContinue reading “Ibish”
Of Orchids and Goldilocks
A kindly Asian lady at the Market of Marion shared her knowledge of caring for orchids and then helped find the one that was right for us. The first one was too big, the next was too small, then she said: “I know just what your looking for,” and led us to this beauty. Indeed,Continue reading “Of Orchids and Goldilocks”
Bloomin’ Trees
The light green and golden hues of the oak trees shed more than just colorful light. Pollen is also raining down from these trees that are in full spring bloom. Yellow powder coats the walks, decks, and cars that are outside, and also indiscriminately drifts about to disturb the linings of our eyes and sinuses.Continue reading “Bloomin’ Trees”
March Hares?
Maybe these are hares, maybe they are rabbits but either way, these bunnies do not appear to be “mad” and seem quite at home on our doorstep. #hare #rabbit #bunny #marchhare
“Metalican”
Cedar Key residents have interesting ways of displaying their affection for the local, non-human citizens. One resident created this sculpture of a white pelican standing atop a faux pier piling and sporting a green fish that it has yet to devour. It was an eye-catching tribute that seemed pleasing to all except, perhaps to theContinue reading ““Metalican””
Going for Gold
They arrived around Christmas, little birds dull brown in color. They were distinguishable only by their wing markings. As spring begins to unfold, their colors are changing, and hints of the the gold colors, for which they are known, are appearing. In a couple more weeks they will have their full coat of yellow feathersContinue reading “Going for Gold”
