While getting the house shuttered today, I chanced across this butterfly flitting about the flowers. It seemed calm and serene as it helped itself to the blossoms. I hope it stays that way for a while, and when the time comes, I hope it finds safe shelter to ride out the weather. #butterfly #storm #flowers

Red Morning Warning
Helene is on her way. The red glow in the dawning sky warned of stormy times ahead. We are expecting 40-60 mph winds with gusts upwards of 70 mph by midday tomorrow. Six to eight inches of rain area also possible. Today is preparation day to remove potential wind-blown missiles, protect plants and lawn ornaments,Continue reading “Red Morning Warning”
L’araignée est arrivée
L’araignée (French for spider) is back at his bookcase perch to add a delightful degree of creepiness to the Halloween season. Most of the year he waits patiently in his lair in the dental cabinet where I display my collection of rocks and bottles, but now he’s out for a few glorious autumn weeks toContinue reading “L’araignée est arrivée”
Evening Star
It isn’t actually a star, but it is the star of the evening light show now and will be for the next several months. Venus is coming around from behind the Sun and is nearly at “full” phase similar to the full moon. For the next several months it will gleam in the evening skyContinue reading “Evening Star”
Color It Autumn
Happy autumn equinox! It’s officially the first day of fall, but the flowers don’t seem to mind. The hibiscus plants stopped blooming during the heat of the summer, but with shorter, less hot days (“cooler” doesn’t really apply here in Florida yet) they are again bursting forth with blossoms. This is my kind of fallContinue reading “Color It Autumn”

Pins and Needles
While washing windows, I discovered these fine fungal filaments about the length of a straight pin on the front door. They were casting shadows like gnomons of a sundial. If they could be used as a timepiece, I suspect they would say that it is time to wash the door. #fungi #door #filaments #sundial
Ghouls’ Garden
It’s not that far off; Halloween is about seven weeks away. Already, a Harvest Moon has been seen lurking low in the west; casting its golden glow through the trees before dawn. Next will come the Hunter’s Moon, followed by the spooky eve before All Saints’ Day, also known as All Hallows’ Day. No, I’mContinue reading “Ghouls’ Garden”
Perigean Moon
Yesterday morning, September 18, 2024, the full moon peered between branches of trees and seemed to wink at us as we walked through the neighborhood in the predawn twilight. It appeared especially large and bright then and for good reason. It was about as close to Earth as it ever gets. The orbit of theContinue reading “Perigean Moon”
Window Plopper
The blinds were closed for the night; I was playing ukulele in the music room when I heard a distinct plop outside my window. My eyes grew wide, I stopped playing, and turned towards the shade. What evil might be lurking in the darkness? An intruder, a racoon, a bear? (Yes, we have seen themContinue reading “Window Plopper”
