Usually they have a domed top like a soft cushiony, umbrella-shaped stool, so that’s why I like the term “toadstool.” However this one seems shaped more like a birdbath, so might it be called a toad bath? If so, the last toad to use it must have really needed a bath! #toadstool #toadbath #mushroom

Early Riser
The sun had barely risen when this tiny little mushroom caught my eye. Delicate and fragile, it barely rose above the blades of grass. I had not noticed it the day before and did not see it the next day. Perhaps that’s why it arose so early in the morning, one day may have beenContinue reading “Early Riser”
Mushroom Magic
Small and unassuming, the white mushroom snuggled comfortably at the base of a tree in the yard. Though only three inches high, it loomed much bigger in the imagination, and I just had to get its photo. Being a big fan of Fairies, my mind conjured tiny eyes peering from behind the ferns, perhaps startledContinue reading “Mushroom Magic”
Sly ‘Shrooms
They seem to slyly rise through mulch or grass, looking much like satellite antennae. Of course, they are actually the spore-bearing appendages to fungi under ground, but it more fun to imagine Lilliputian creatures below seeking access to satellite signals from high above. #mushroom #shrooms #lilliputian #satelliteantennae
‘Shroom-bow
With the recent warm, wet weather, mushrooms are sprouting in the neighborhood lawns. This group appears to have been sprayed in an arc alongside the street. Often they form expanding circles sometimes known as fairy rings, however, in this case they appear to make an arch like a rainbow. Either way they make a greatContinue reading “‘Shroom-bow”
Plenty of Room Elsewhere
There was plenty of room all around, just not right here. These three mushrooms look like a failed stack of pancakes since they all popped up in nearly the same place. I can’t help wondering if they came from the same organism, of if they are three different fungi, all battling for the same territory.Continue reading “Plenty of Room Elsewhere”
Lawn-potato
Wow! It looks like a big, delicious potato; just cook, add sour cream, chives, and some seasoning, and it’s good to go. But what’s with all the grass? Turns out it’s not a potato after all, but one of the strangest mushrooms we have seen in recent times. Nope, not going to try and eatContinue reading “Lawn-potato”
Mushroom in the Morning
Another mushroom popped up in a local yard overnight, shortly after a passing hurricane sent several inches of rain our way. It almost looks as if it spent the night wearing curlers. This one was solitary, but often they are in closely gathered bunches, and at times in ever expanding rings, known as fairy rings.Continue reading “Mushroom in the Morning”
Mushroom Omelet
Actually, it’s not an omelet, it is just a backyard mushroom that resembles one, and I don’t think I would try to put it in an omelet since I don’t know if it is safe to eat. I once heard a guide in Spain say that all mushrooms are edible but some can only beContinue reading “Mushroom Omelet”
Fungal Fam
In a well watered yard they are popping up like, well, themselves. They start as little white balls, then flatten out overnight, drop their spores and then fade away. But the mushroom fungus is not really gone, for these toadstools are mere projections from fibers of the main fungal body that exists extensively beneath theContinue reading “Fungal Fam”
