I recently caught these images of gigantic magnetic explosions on the sun (bright areas near the solar limb). They are far larger than earth which is represented by the blue dot at the bottom center of the image. They result from chaotic interactions between unbelievably strong magnetic fields that explosively reconnect and shower the solarContinue reading “KABOOM!”

3664-3697-3723
(No, those are not lottery numbers or the code to a bank vault. ) A great sunspot group came into view on May 1, 2024 and produced multiple solar flares, including the one that caused the aurora borealis to be seen as far south as Puerto Rico and Hawaii on May 10 and 11. ItContinue reading “3664-3697-3723”
Cause and Effect
A giant sunspot flared several times recently and hurled bits of the sun towards earth. The rejected solar material burst into the earth’s magnetic field two days later to produce this spectacular light show that has been visible as far south as Florida, and even Puerto Rico! Per Eddie Irizarry of the Sociedad de AstronomiaContinue reading “Cause and Effect”
Solar Hot Spot
Yesterday morning the sun unleased another solar flare, and I caught views of it fading away. The brightest area on the upper left image is around 50,000 miles across and shows the flare shortly after its peak while the lower right shows the same region after the flare has ended. The other two images showContinue reading “Solar Hot Spot”
New Years Eve Fireworks
The day after Christmas, the Mars Perseverance Rover photographed the sun revealing the large spot as seen on the lower right image. The spot was estimated to be 200,000 kilometers across and was located on the far side of the sun. It was predicted to become visible from the earth in about a week. Yesterday,Continue reading “New Years Eve Fireworks”
Here Comes the Sun
Yesterday’s images of the Sun revealed that something was missing compared to two days before, when I had last observed. A large filament of suspended solar hydrogen (see arrows upper left image) over 200 thousand miles long had vanished by the time I took yesterday’s photo as seen on the upper right. Where’d it go?Continue reading “Here Comes the Sun”
Bull’s Eye!
On July 29, 2023, I was fortunate enough during my daily imaging of the sun to catch a moderately strong solar flare right at its peak as seen as the very bright area on the upper image. The lower image is from the Space Weather Prediction Center GOES satellite x-ray data. The vertical line marksContinue reading “Bull’s Eye!”
Sun With a Flare
Sunspots with their magnetic fields are visible on the right of the photo with their NOAA numbers listed below the image. The spot near the center is larger than the Earth, and the bright area to the upper left of center (labeled 2996 plage) is a gigantic magnetic explosion that hurled high-energy x-rays and particlesContinue reading “Sun With a Flare”
