Toubo and His Boy

Howard and Toubo around 1957 or 1958

If there ever was just one dog of my life, it was Toubo, a white German Shepard. He was named after Toubo Smith of the TV series, “Soldiers of Fortune,” which ran from 1955 through 1956. I can just barely remember the show, but our family loved it and when this squirming white pup came to live with us, everyone immediately agreed on his name.

True to his name, he was always up for adventure, especially in the woodlands of the Platte River. At the mere statement, “Let’s go down to the river,” he would nearly wriggle out of his skin in excitement, and we had many adventures together there.

I could write much more about him, but suffice it to say he was a very special companion and I learned a very important life lesson from him. More about that at another time.
