Grinning Again

Moon and Venus last night after sunset.

As promised last week (“Vertical Moon” at: https://eskildoodle.com/2023/04/16/vertical-moon/ ), the evening crescent Moon is grinning once again. Just a week ago it appeared nearly vertical as it approached the Sun in the morning sky, but now it appears to lay nearly horizontal like the Cheshire Cat’s grin. The astronomical explanation for this is related to the tilt of Earth relative to the ecliptic, the path followed by the Moon and planets as they travel across the sky. However, I prefer a more fanciful explanation; it’s grinning because it is so close to Venus, the goddess of love. After all, science may be interesting, but love is much more fun!
