Flowers brighten the first day of May or May Day, which is a European festival of ancient origins. It was once considered the first day of summer since it is half way between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. Now, however, summer is considered to start at the summer solstice since the warming of the earth lags behind the increasing duration of the daytime sunlight. Either way it is a pleasant break between winter’s chill and summer’s heat.
