Fable of the Table

Fable Restaurant, Richland, Washington

The aptly named Fable Restaurant was the site of a recent delightful dinner along the Columbia River. Boats bobbed in slack water behind Bateman Island while we were being seated at our outdoor table in the shade. Unfortunately, the umbrella of the next table was removed a short time later, exposing us to hot sun, but fortunately, the table behind us was fully shaded, so we moved.

As luck would have it, a gentleman next to our new table greeted us. He was ex-army, and since another army vet (me) and a Marine were at our table, a fun conversation ensued. Not to be left out, another army vet and a submariner from the next table joined in. We had a great time bloviating about our experiences until our food arrived and set our conversation at ease.

When we had finished and were paying the bill, our waitress stopped by to visit and told us her boyfriend was in special forces and on assignment at the time. We wished them both well, hoping that he would stay safe and return with more stories that could be shared. It had been a special opportunity to have dined at that table and shared tales that were much more than just fables.
