Easier In than Out

Ribbon Snake in Pool

Small wavelets rippling from the side of the pool revealed that something was not happy in the water and wanted out. Expecting another one of the ubiquitous small frogs, I sauntered over with a skimmer net to rescue the struggling creature.

To my surprise, it was a harmless little ribbon snake so desperately seeing escape, and I scooped it up with the net and deposited it outside on the lawn. I expected it to slither quickly away, but instead, it lie motionless, twisted into tight coils; a snake’s “fetal position,” I suppose. Later, when I returned, it was gone, apparently no worse for the wear.

It was just another example how it is much easier to into a predicament than it is to get out of one. I wonder if it learned its lesson; people seldom do.
