Broken Oak

Along a Florida Country Road

It weathered storms, droughts, and hurricanes for centuries. Then one day, weighed down by water, decay, and its own great mass, it split down the trunk, casting branches on one side to the ground. The fallen branches no longer balance the growth on the other side, and it may soon topple over as well. We certainly did not tarry while passing beneath its overhanging remnants.

Epilogue: Nine days later, we traveled this way again and found work crews dismembering what remained of the tree. Good idea, without the other half to balance what remained, it was coming down one way or the other. All the better that it be under controlled conditions.
