Earning Its Wings

Fledgling Red-shouldered Hawk

Like couple of awkward teenagers, two young hawks cried mournfully from a roost about a dozen feet from their nest. One finally mustered the courage to take off and fly to the other side of the nest, then after a brief pause, it flew to a feeble branch halfway to the ground. Leaves and twigs shook wildly as the youngster struggled for footing on the floppy branch. Not the nicest landing, but it worked, somewhat.

It soon grew weary of its wobbly situation and flew down to the ground, landing somewhat more gracefully on landscape mulch where it blended into the background. When we returned about 10 minutes later it was still there, perhaps reluctant to return to the sky.

It peered warily at us as we passed behind a tree, and when it caught sight of us on the other side, it leapt skyward and flew to the rooftop where it landed gracefully, out of harm’s way, no longer seeming to be afraid of flying
