Who’s Strange?

Gift Pelican

Several years ago we went on an airboat ride in southern Florida, and at the end of the ride a pelican perched itself on the bow of the boat in search of handouts. Someone remarked about how strange it looked, and I began to wonder how we must look to them. I wrote a poem from a pelican’s point of view which was entitled “Strange Bird” and made a poster of the poem on a background of one of my photos. (See: https://eskildoodle.com/strange-bird/.)

Later, I gave a copy of the poster to an acquaintance who liked it. Recently, I received a phone call from him saying that he had this sculpture that he knew I would like and wanted me to have it since it had served its purpose for him. It now sits proudly at our entry way, and whenever I pass by it I can’t help but grin as we gaze at each other wondering which one of us looks the strangest.

Thanks, David.
