Early one morning the Moon showed its mountains, volcanoes, craters, and cracks through my backyard telescope in great detail. Later I turned the scope towards Saturn, which was about 10 degrees ahead of the moon, and inserted its photo in the image above for comparison. Both are at the same magnification.
Saturn shows its famous rings with the lower right portion of the ring disappearing into the shadows as it approaches the body of the planet. Saturn is huge compared to the Moon, but is so far away that it looks smaller than some of the Moon’s craters and yields very little surface detail. However, the proximity of our little Moon makes it look so big in the sky that it shows details that run circles around Saturn.
