Rain Shadow

Outline of branch in dirt.

While picking up branches from the yard after a recent downpour, I discovered the outline of the branch that I had just retrieved still visible in the dirt where it had fallen. The large drops had cratered and collapsed the dirt around the branch but left the soil under it relatively intact to create what I thought of as a “rain shadow” of the branch (with apologies to meteorologists, of course). I nearly bent over to pick it up again before I realized what I was seeing. In a sense it was a “dirty” trick that nature pulled on me, but I did see the humor in it.
