We were sad to see our granddaughter board the plane for her return trip home after a very fun visit to Florida. Apparently, so was the sky; about 20 minutes after the photo above was taken, clouds over the control tower billowed, darkened, and began to weep great drops of rain. In preparation for push back, ground crews with orange flashlights walked towards the wingtips to guide the plane. Suddenly lightning flashed, thunder crashed, and they dropped their flashlights and scurried back to shelter and safety before the plane could leave. It had come so close to departing!
Rain intensified over the next few hours with frequent lightning and thunder, and some passengers chose to deboard while waiting for the weather to clear. Three hours later, the lightning hazard diminished enough to allow workers back out on the wet tarmac and the airplane finally left the gate.
Through it all, our granddaughter remained in good spirits as we communicated through texts but in the end she, like us, was very happy to be able to finally depart from the airport.
