Preharvest Moon

Late August Moon

The last full moon preceding the Harvest Moon shimmered in the morning sky before setting, and conjured memories of a distant past and a Nebraska farm along the Platte River. Days became shorter, nights cooler, and an autumn tint began to appear on some of the trees while the kids moaned about having to return to school.

The days that followed led up to the harvest where “overtime” meant continuing to work by the light the Harvest Moon long after the sun had set. It was honest, arduous work, but a successful harvest meant enough food and money to get us through the winter, a change in workload until time for spring planting, and maybe even some new clothes if we were lucky.
