”It’s June in January…” crooned Bing Crosby in the 1934 movie Here Is My Heart. The photo above is actually June 2021 at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood, Oregon. By Florida standards it was “January in June,” or worse. Fortunately for us our weather this January has been much milder than June at the lodge,Continue reading “June in January”

More Than Meets the Eye
I posted the two flower images recently; yesterday afternoon I got my microscope out to look at the pollen from each. Wow, what a difference! Both flowers have their own distinct pollen as do all the other flowering plants. Not only are the flowers beautiful, their pollen proves that there is much more to theContinue reading “More Than Meets the Eye”
Winter Bloom
Saw this flower outside our door this morning. Though it is officially winter, the weather has been mild and this flower is making the best of it.
Wren Wood
A friend showed us a coffee table that had been made from the trunk of a local tree. Gaps and cracks in its center took the form of a bird that begged to be photographed. Colorful carpet below it complimented the scene to creat a real ”tweet!”
Longer Days
Yes, the days are getting longer though it might not seem like it. The Sun actually begins to set later in mid December even though shortest day occurs around December 21/22. In contrast, the sun continues rise later until early January when, at last, it begins to come up earlier. These few minutes are hardlyContinue reading “Longer Days”
Tree Fingers
Our hike along the nearby greenway takes us past this tree that was laid low by strong winds years ago. Now it rests on its side, its once towering branches reaching out like fingers, neither threatening nor inviting, merely resting.
Candy of Christmas Past

Little by little we will get through these tempting little treats, but we don’t want to end up looking like bears getting ready for hibernation. On the other hand, my dad used to say that the best way toContinue reading “Candy of Christmas Past”
Indoor Bloom
This amaryllis grew in just a few weeks from a bulb in a small puck of soil that expanded greatly with the simple addition of water. All we had to do then was wait. It’s amazing how some water and a little patience can brighten one’s life.
Puzzle for the Birds
We had a great time New Years Eve and the day after putting this beauty together. It was fun, but more challenging than first expected. But we still love our little avian adversaries on the puzzle and will definitely do this again in the not-too-near future.
Maui Splash
Well, this gift from family made quite a ”splash.” It came just in time for the new year. It has been special to us since we first tasted in in Maui several years ago. We were touring the Maui upcountry on the flanks of Haleakala and were delighted by the winery that produced this wine.Continue reading “Maui Splash”
