On return from our morning walk we found this watcher at the door, seemingly snoozing. Perhaps it had a late night and needed a little rest before starting its day’s activities, or maybe it had been attracted to lights above the driveway that had been on earlier. Regardless, it was a pleasant surprise to startContinue reading “Fuzzy Little Friend”

Sirius-ly!
Finally, Sirius is on the rise! This means that the peak summer temperatures will soon be on the decline. It was once thought that summer’s heat was due to the alignemnt of the sun with Sirius, the brightest star in our nighttime sky. It had been proposed that their combined heat made summer’s days soContinue reading “Sirius-ly!”
Bye Bye, Banyan
Eyes grow moist as we think of the people of Maui and the firestorm disaster at Lahaina. We have spent many days there admiring the views and learning of the Hawaiian culture. Now it appears that the banyan tree, planted in 1873, was severely charred along with the major portion of the town. Photos fromContinue reading “Bye Bye, Banyan”
The Mane Event
Last August we attended the Wisconsin State Fair and met this equine beauty. It was a wonderful time and we wish we could have been there this year, but that wasn’t possible. Perhaps another time. #horse #wisconsinstatefair
Just Passing Through
Yesterday morning the Moon passed by Jupiter on its monthly trek around earth. This scene will repeat itself over the next several months as we head into fall and on towards winter. Before long, Venus will rise in the morning sky as well and provide the opportunity to see the three brightest planetary objects inContinue reading “Just Passing Through”
Seeing Ghosts
Nope, it isn’t about spectral phenomena, it’s about the outer shell of a cicaida that was shed as the insect grew. It left its ghost shell to “haunt” our shed in the back yard. Rather than “ectoplasm” it consists of a polysaccharide known as chitin, and doesn’t really scare anyone, not even on Halloween. However,Continue reading “Seeing Ghosts”
Good Day, Lilly
While waiting for the sun to come out so I could get images, I was lured away from my telescopes by this backyard beauty. A short time later, the clouds parted and flower and I both had our time in the sun. Though I love seeing the sun through my solar telescopes, the glory ofContinue reading “Good Day, Lilly”
Milking the Moment
It might be said that the cows have finally come home. #cow #couch #milking
Glendalough
The Irish settlement of Glendalough was founded in the 6th century by St. Kevin. It functioned as a monastic community for centuries and is still revered as a priceless historic and cultural site. The Round Tower rises to nearly 100 feet height and is seen here framed in an opening in the remaining potions ofContinue reading “Glendalough”
Hoppin’ Glad
Every time it rains in the summer, the nights and early mornings are full of the sounds of croaking frogs. It is almost as if they come down with the rain, but I do know better than that. It keeps them from dehydrating as the spend the night carousing and looking for romance. This frogContinue reading “Hoppin’ Glad”
