Its called a stromatolite (stro’-mat-o-lite). It’s a fossil remnant of mats of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae. The microorganisms grew in mats, bound together by slimy secretions that allowed entry of nutrients but protected them from environmental hazards. This allowed them to form three dimensional “microbe cities” that took knobby shapes. The top imageContinue reading “Stromato-what?”

My Side of the Clouds
Looking up at the morning sky, I couldn’t help wondering what it was like on the other side of the clouds. The ever-deepening blue of the sky gave a hint. As the Artemis II astronauts gazed back at a tiny, crescent earth from beyond the moon, their comments described its blue and white color standingContinue reading “My Side of the Clouds”
This Little Piggie…
Several years ago, I took this photo of a cute little pot-bellied pig in the doorway to a small store in Lahaina. It appeared to someone’s pet that lived there, so I assume that it not only “went to market,” it also, “stayed home.” It’s name was Pork Chop but it was so cute withContinue reading “This Little Piggie…”
Guardian of the Gate
Fortunately, I looked at this latch before opening it. A tiny frog had perched itself in harms way, so I shooed it away before opening the door; I certainly didn’t want make the little critter croak. #frog #gate #doorlatch #croak
Hi, ‘biscus!
To paraphrase an old Johnny Carson joke: “How do you greet your hibiscus in the morning? Hi, ‘biscus!” This new plant is a welcome addition to our lanai and its flowers grace a vase in the house now and then so we can say “Hi,” indoors and out. #hibiscus #lanai #greetings
Dodge Tired
With its carcass practically lying on the pavement, it appeared, at first glance, that this rod was not so hot and had either popped its wheelies or needed a rest. Perhaps it had run out of high octane. Also, it’s gray paint job was accented with a rusty brown color that made it look nearlyContinue reading “Dodge Tired”
What Ever Happened to…?
A squirrel perched in the hollow of a broken, burned out tree stump and watched as we walked along the forest trail darkened by shadows of clouds. Moments later, a small airplane flew over, and I stopped to watch it go by. I have been attracted to aircraft since childhood. My dad had learned toContinue reading “What Ever Happened to…?”
Welcome Home
Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen have been there and back. They set records for the farthest distance from earth and for the fastest speed that humans have ever traveled, and then they safely returned on target and on time. I’m “over the moon!” #artemisII #moon
Doodles
The doodlebug larvae, aka antlions, are back and have set their traps in waiting for hapless ants to fall into and become a meal. These larvae may wait in their pits for days for meal, and it could take months to ingest enough ants to grow into the lacy-winged adult fly that is sometimes mistakenContinue reading “Doodles”
Moon Near and Far
The top photo was taken from Artemis 2 as it was swinging around the far side of the moon. The lower image was taken from my driveway in 2020 through a telescope and and barely captures features that are easily seen from space. Grimaldi is always visible from earth when it is sunlit, but MareContinue reading “Moon Near and Far”
