Over 60 years ago I climbed Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park with my dad. We drove from Nebraska to Colorado and spent several days hiking and camping in the mountains to acclimate to the altitude. On the day of ascent we arose at 4 AM, had pancakes for breakfast, and then we startedContinue reading “Over the Hill”

To Barter with the Sea
Displays like this are often seen in coastal shops, but these shells and corals were not purchased; we found them all. Of particular note, the cowry in the lower right corner came from a motu (small island along the reef) between the islands of Taha’a and Ra’iatea in French Polynesia. We were on a cruiseContinue reading “To Barter with the Sea”
Running Errorands
The pill organizer we ordered from Amazon to replace our worn out travel case turned out to be too large, clunky, and heavy. No problem, I thought, just return it through the UPS Store as we had in the past when necessary. The Amazon website for returns threw me for a loop, however, when itContinue reading “Running Errorands”
Crosswind
The orange windsock on the lower right of the photo is nearly straight out with 15 knot winds gusting to 25 directly across to the runway. Good time for light aircraft to remain on the ground. I did successfully challenge similar winds once in Cheyenne, Wyoming, in a Piper Clipper but the runway was muchContinue reading “Crosswind”
Funie Monday

It was named after William Jephunneh “Funie” Steed, a well-respected attorney who was also a military veteranContinue reading “Funie Monday”
Mountain High
It’s better not having to take off from a high altitude when you’re flying light aircraft. The thin air at higher altitudes robs the engine of horsepower and limits the airplane’s performance. This lengthens the takeoff roll considerably and decreases the rate of climb. Cruising speed is also decreased a bit. Even so, this lightContinue reading “Mountain High”
Storming the Sunset
It didn’t seem threatening at first, just a cumulus cloud backlit by the sun and sending streamers across the sky. However, as our boat cruise about the lake and its adjacent waterways progressed, the cloud grew and began dropping rain. Fortunately, it was to on the opposite side of the lake and headed away fromContinue reading “Storming the Sunset”
Two of a Kind
A new ukulele arrived today, not for me, but for a friend who had seen and played my outdoor ukulele. They are inexpensive, have a great sound, can tolerate extreme temperatures, and are very strong and durable. I use mine for a travel ukulele; it has been all over there US, in the Pacific, theContinue reading “Two of a Kind”
