Hurricane or not, life goes on, and after the tempest passed, this cicada decided that he had outgrown his skin. No problem, simply crawl out of it. It is known as molting, and the “nymph” transforms into an “adult” when it emerges from its exoskeleton shell which is left behind. After a brief period ofContinue reading “To Big for His Britches”

Debby Tree Debris
As hurricane Debby approached, our neighbor’s cracked tree came down. Whether it was taken down intentionally just before she arrived, or knocked down by her rain and wind, we don’t know. It had leaned ominously over the street with a large crack down the lower back of its trunk for more than a year, andContinue reading “Debby Tree Debris”
Full at Five
Hurricane Debby is passing northwest of us and dropping torrents of rain and since yesterday afternoon has filled our rain gauge at 5 inches. How much more we got, I really don’t know. While not getting the worst of it, we are expecting winds gusting over 30 MPH and 2-3 more inches of rain today.Continue reading “Full at Five”
Flying Motorcycle?
The autogyro has to be the closest thing to a flying motorcycle that there is. It has a cockpit on a frame suspended beneath rotor blades, and it is powered by an engine and propeller in back. The engine pushes the the craft forward, but unlike a helicopter the rotor spins freely, driven only byContinue reading “Flying Motorcycle?”
Egrets Only?
Often cattle and egrets are found together, hence the name “cattle egret, however, this appears to be a bird only party. Perhaps the cattle thought the party invitation’s RSVP read: “Egrets Only.” Cattle are kindly, but they don’t read so well. #cattleegret #egret #cattle
Ten Thousand

I started in 2003 but was limited by my work schedule until 2018. Since then the observation numbers have soared. I like this image; it makes the Sun lookContinue reading “Ten Thousand”
Autumn Winds
While touring Ireland in 2019, we traveled across the great, green countryside which inspired the song, “Forty Shades of Green,” by Johnny Cash. It also inspired the poem above, and I just had to write it down will still riding on the bus that day. #fortyshadesofgreen #autumnwinds #ireland
Cumulo-pelican
Ascending clouds in the morning light foretold of rains to come. This cumulonimbus cloud, to me, briefly resembled a pelican. However, instead of a large bird plunging into the water, this scene tuned into more water plunging down on us, over 10 inches this month. #cumulonimbus #clouds #pelican #rain
The Truth of the Matter
There’s been a lot of bull in the papers lately and there appears to be a lot more coming. Would somebody please pull the handle? #papers #bull #handle
