I’m not exactly sure what is meant by a “Pass Air Bag,” but in an emergency, I suppose it would be good to have a bag for it. Perhaps it is good that it is off for the moment. But what has me more concerned is the number “2” below and behind the restrained passengerContinue reading “Addled Abbreviations”

Plenty of Room Elsewhere
There was plenty of room all around, just not right here. These three mushrooms look like a failed stack of pancakes since they all popped up in nearly the same place. I can’t help wondering if they came from the same organism, of if they are three different fungi, all battling for the same territory.Continue reading “Plenty of Room Elsewhere”
Two Cents Worth
Living on an old homestead in central Nebraska yielded treasures of the past from time to time. This 1865 bronze two cent piece was found sometime in the early 1960’s, laying in the dirt near a chicken coop. It was promptly added to my coin collection, which up to that point consisted mostly of pennies.Continue reading “Two Cents Worth”
Rocking on Memories
I can still see him, clad in kahki, in my mind’s eye; tall, slender, with a full head of white hair, surprisingly upright for his age, and walking purposefully with a slight arthritic limp. In his right hand, a fly rod paralleled the ground while his left hand held a tackle box. Beside him, asContinue reading “Rocking on Memories”
Mammoth Molar
I remember as a grade schooler walking by a sandpit along the Platte River. In the water of the sandpit, a floating barge had a massive gravel pump that pumped up a slurry of sand, gravel and a few larger rocks to a tall hopper on land. Above the hopper, a series of screens sortedContinue reading “Mammoth Molar”
Happy Slacker
Several years ago we went on a one day tour of Moloka’i. I had the good fortune to meet Todd Ragsdale who made this koa wood tenor Ukulele which I subsequently purchased. It has a lovely sound with a low G fourth string (octive lower than standard ukulele). Two years ago I purchased a slack-keyContinue reading “Happy Slacker”
Scene of the Crime
For the sake of squimish viewers, the shattered corpse of the Diet Coke can was removed from the scene of the crime. But the soggy residue says more than can be imagined of the tragic, violent end of this beverage. Whether involuntary can-slaughter charges will follow is yet to be determined, but no first degreeContinue reading “Scene of the Crime”
Mighty Moth
This marvelous moth with a wingspan of well over 3 inches provided another obstacle on the walkway yesterday. It was quite a sight and seemed quite comfortable. I thought about picking it up, but then had second thoughts. It was pretty big, so I decided not to “bug it.” #polyphemusmoth #moth
Monsters Amok
Many years ago we spent a few weeks in northern Wyoming, where we encountered these aptly named “monster cookies.” Of course, the recipe followed us home and once in a while it bursts forth to entice us to make 14 dozen of these cookies at a time. Yes, that is how many the recipie produces;Continue reading “Monsters Amok”
Autumn Light
Twice a year, at the equinoxes, fingers of light prod across the dining room table for a final, gentle caress from the setting sun. The fall colors, awash with the subdued rays, blend together to create this scene as they always do for just a few days every year. #equinox #sunset #sunbeams #fallcolors
