Made of twigs and Spanish moss, it is a sweet home for a lady cardinal whose orange beak can be seen near the center of the image. She was a pleasant surprise as we settled into our own “nest” after a prolonged absence. #homesweethome #cardinal #nest #homecoming

New Life
Upon return from our morning walk yesterday, we spied an eggshell fragment on the driveway that was not there when we had left earlier. An adult bird apparently had carried the fragment and dropped it away from the nest. Close examination revealed that it was a red-shouldered hawk eggshell and had been occupied very recently.Continue reading “New Life”
Wasp Nest
On our way back from our walk recently we discovered this wasp nest on our lawn. It apparently had fallen from a tree. The egg chambers are surrounded by paper-like layers, presumably to protect from sun and weather.
