Our Sun, a giant hydrogen bomb, is held together by its extreme mass which contains the nuclear fire within, but its power extends well beyond its surface. Intense magnetic fields force the form of its face into fantastic, dark, dragon-like filaments by elevating billions of tons of matter into serpentine strips 100,000 miles or moreContinue reading “Dragon Sun”

Solar Siblings
This morning Venus (bright planet left central image) is joined by Saturn and Mars, the tiny pair to the upper right of the image. Saturn and Mars are so close together that they could both be covered by the disk of the Moon if it were in the right position. The trio of planets willContinue reading “Solar Siblings”
Stormy Sunset
Yesterday storm clouds burst across the sky bring high winds and an inch of rain. Two of the flamingos in the pool area blew over, but at least they didn’t fly away. It appeared dark most of the day, but at sunset, rays of light penetrated the maelstrom with a glorious farewell. Moments later theContinue reading “Stormy Sunset”
Hello Little Bug
While on our walk yesterday Fairy noticed something on her glasses, perhaps dirt. But wait, this dirt was moving! Fortunately it turned out to be something cute rather than creepy. Eventually, however, like a computer, the glasses had to be debugged. Note: No harm was suffered by the bug or the glasses, and hopefully noContinue reading “Hello Little Bug”

HAPPY APRIL FOOLS’ DAY
Bear Tree?

Sunrise Surprise
Rays on the desktop from the rising sun created a scene of sunlight and shadow that caught my eye. Even the ordinary can appear extraordinary when seen in a different light.
Column Calamity
Top left: first Winogradsky column. lower right: New Winogradsky Column in protected area. Other images: Handiworks of Mr. Racoon including incriminating footprints. It is known as a Winogradsky Column and is supposed to be an environment for microbes, full of mud, water, paper shreds, and an egg yolk. Mix it together, then put it inContinue reading “Column Calamity”
Home Sweet Home
While tidying up our pineapple plot, we discovered this frog snugly resting on a leaf. These pineapple plants produce really delicious fruit, so this frog has a very sweet home indeed.
Plumeria and the Phoenix
Like a phoenix arising from its own ashes, these shoots are budding replacements for the tree from which they were taken. The tree itself was killed in a hard freeze this winter, but these shoots were taken before the freeze and kept safe in the shed. When they started to bud while in a boxContinue reading “Plumeria and the Phoenix”
