Refugee
We moved the plumeria in a pot into the house to protect it from freezing weather. One morning we discovered a head peering from the white PVC pipe that helped brace the plant. Not only the plant, but also the lizard had taken refuge from the cold much to our amusement. #lizard #plumeria #coldweather
Pirate Ice
An ice sculpture of a pirate ship, stood proudly in front of the clock tower that might as well have been blue rather than red since the temperatures had dipped into the 30’s. At least there was little danger of the sculpture melting prematurely! #icesculpture #coldweather #pirate #pirateship
Cluck-a-noodle-doo!
Nothing warms the soul like a bowl of hot, homemade chicken noodle soup on a cold winter day! #chickennoodlesoup #cold #winter
Caterwauling
Yowls emanated beyond our back yard and sounded like a catfight was about to start. I stopped to wait for the ensuing fracas, but it never materialized. Finally, I decided to leave as quietly as possible, but the cats noticed me and both mellowed with no “punches” being thrown. They even seemed to make peaceContinue reading “Caterwauling”
Febrrrruary!
Brisk northwest winds brought more freezing weather to Florida and sloshed the water in this birdbath, leaving an icicle dangling on the downwind side. The birds were not impressed; one dejected crow just gave me a dirty look from its frozen surface and then flew away. I found a way to thaw out a hose,Continue reading “Febrrrruary!”
The Reason Why
Most people love to go to theme parks for the thrill of the rides and attractions, but as the memories of the rides fade into the past, it’s the thoughts of the people we were with that remain. It seems that the real theme of any park is simply being with the people that weContinue reading “The Reason Why”
Goldfinch!
Usually the goldfinches are here by Christmas, and almost always by New Year’s Day, but this year, we didn’t see any until yesterday, January 30, 2026. We had begun to worry that they would not come this year, so we were very excited to see our little, feathered friends; it was a golden moment. #americangoldfinchContinue reading “Goldfinch!”
Pressure, Temperature, and Volume
This sad little inflatable Moon globe in the garage was round as a beach ball a few days ago when the temperature was warm, but now that it’s cold, this Moon is a shriveled shadow of itself. Why? In some dusty old book on the shelf there is the formula: pV=nRT which can be manipulatedContinue reading “Pressure, Temperature, and Volume”
On Becoming a House Plant
Normally this plant, which we call “Seymour,” sits outside in the nice, warm Florida weather; only there hasn’t been any warm weather lately. So, we temporarily put our little green friend in the garage to keep him from freezing. Over the weekend it will get even worse, we’re expecting temperatures in the low twenties! ThisContinue reading “On Becoming a House Plant”
