The rumbling roar of large round engines told of a formation of WW II era airplanes flying by. Once rulers of the sky, the few such aircraft that remain are treasured memories of a different era that must never be forgotten. They flew by on Memorial Day in route to ceremonies nearby, leaving behind echoesContinue reading “Warbird Salute”

Hurricane Season
Hurricane season officially starts tomorrow. What will happen and how will it color our summer and fall? Predictions vary to a such a wide degree it might as well be simply said: “We don’t know.” Hurricanes will form and follow paths that will only be known in retrospect. In the meantime, we can only prepare,Continue reading “Hurricane Season”
Remembering
For all who served and especially for those who did not return. Thank you for freedom.
Piliated Pair
Raucous calls from a pair of birds directed our eyes to nearby trees during our morning walk. Out came the cell phone and with the help of a 2X lens and some digital enlargement, images of the pair were captured. Like the old cartoon character, Woody Woodpecker, the piliated woodpeckers are loud, flashy, and alwaysContinue reading “Piliated Pair”
Purple Panoply
We took time to enjoy this morning marvel, an agapanthus blooming in our front yard, a happy thought to start this memorial weekend.
Backyard Dinner
A red-shouldered hawk dines on a dead squirrel by the bird feeder in the backyard. Some birds feed on the seeds in the feeder, some squirrels feed on nuts below the feeder, and some hawks feed on those who dine at the feeders.
Artsy-fartsy?
I don’t really know what to make of wing sculptures that appear to be flying a** backwards, but if they had a finger, I certainly wouldn’t pull it!
Pathway to Yesterday
A walk through the woods recently along the greenway proved to be more than just a path through the forest. Like a tunnel to another time, it summoned memories, nearly six decades old, of childhood wanderings through the trees and thickets along the Platte River in Nebraska. It was a quail’s whistling call, “Poor BobContinue reading “Pathway to Yesterday”
Wilder-berries
While on a walk along the Cross Florida Greenway that runs near our house, I chanced across scattered patches of blackberries. I wondered if I should be wary since bears are occasionally seen in the area and might be attracted to this food source. However, the berry patches showed no signs of any feeding bearsContinue reading “Wilder-berries”
Eviction Notice
We put up two birdhouses in January, and while a couple of chickadees checked one of them out, none took up residence. Other creatures did, however. One of the houses had a nasty wasp nest, which may have been why the chickadees weren’t interested. The nest and attendant wasps were forcefully removed with the helpContinue reading “Eviction Notice”
