I hustled to the closet to fetch the camera after spotting this flycatcher gathering soft, fuzzy lining material for its nest. To my surprise, it lingered long enough to get this photo and even seemed to pose. I wish it and its family well, with many happy returns. #greatcrestedflycatcher #nesting #stuffings #bird

Gloomsday Scenario
Multiple layers of clouds racing different directions gave grudging glimpses of the sun through the early morning. An approaching cold front seemed destined to wring water out or the heavy, damp air, with some estimates of up to three inches of rainfall. Just after noon, gusty winds roared through showering the yards and streets withContinue reading “Gloomsday Scenario”
Tasty Buds
Colorful petals protrude from this budding pineapple. It is well on its way to becoming a sweet, tasty treat. #pineapple #tasty #backyardbeauty
Allergen Alley
The spring plants are in full bloom as are allergy symptoms caused by their pollen. The pollen is produced by anthers, the white structures on the end of filaments as seen in both photos. When they ripen, pollen is released, as seen in the right photo, to fertilize flowers and produce seeds. In the process,Continue reading “Allergen Alley”
Missing Something?
I just had to pull out the phone and get this photo of a pickup without its bed while were at a red light. While the “innards” were interesting to see, I couldn’t help wondering where he left the rest of the truck or why. Then I looked more closely at what I initially thoughtContinue reading “Missing Something?”
Part and Counterpart
A long time ago while hiking in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, I chanced across this small piece of shale, with a slight crack, seen in the upper left photo. I spit it along the crack and found a tiny fossil shell inside which can barely be seen in the two pieces in the upper rightContinue reading “Part and Counterpart”
Gnome on the Range
Part of my morning chores includes putting the Sir Gnome and his faithful friend, Poochie, out to pasture to graze. They don’t need grass or hay, however, they simply feed on the sun’s rays to power them up for their nightly duties. #poochie #gnomes #sunlight #pasture #chores
Avian Air BNB
To the delight of my feathered friends, I recently added a new bird food cylinder to the feeder. A downy woodpecker seems quite happy with the fresh food, as have various other birds. Since it is a “Bug Nut & Berry” cylinder and its clients wing their way there, dare I call it an “AvianContinue reading “Avian Air BNB”
Aromatic Distraction
A semisweet aroma arising from the large bush by the birdfeeders interrupted my yardwork; I had to discover the source. White blossoms that I hadn’t noticed before burst from nearly every branch of the waxleaf privit plant. While its fickle fragrance confused the senses, (Did I like the smell or not?) the beauty of it’sContinue reading “Aromatic Distraction”
Easier In than Out
Small wavelets rippling from the side of the pool revealed that something was not happy in the water and wanted out. Expecting another one of the ubiquitous small frogs, I sauntered over with a skimmer net to rescue the struggling creature. To my surprise, it was a harmless little ribbon snake so desperately seeing escape,Continue reading “Easier In than Out”
